Just Chiming In was spurred on by winning all five of the 5 pointers, including the Lions. Let me, JCI, how you'd like your cash. Overall standings will be posted later today. Tuesday, September 29. 2009Tuesday Around The Thumb...
It was more soccer and volleyball action on the West side of the Thumb as EPBP was at USA for a GTW soccer match and Port Hope was at Owen-Gage for an NCTL volleyball match. Look for Wednesday's Tribune for results from these games, as well as the rest of the action from around the Thumb. Until then, here are some photos.

News: Owendale-Gagetown won its first Mid-Michigan 8-Man League game, and its second overall, with a 30-16 win over Carsonville-Port Sanilac on Friday.
Views: Both Owen-Gage coach Jason Pierce and CPS coach Jeremy Macejewski admit the 8-player game is a little different than regular 11-man football. But they also say the new game saved the varsity programs at their schools. "We've gone from losing 13 straight games to winning a few this year, so that's been a positive," Macejewski said. "Even tonight, the kids are enthused and they are having fun. "I think we have 27 kids on the team. The numbers for us have been better than they have been in a long time." Added Pierce: "Really, it's not that much different coaching because it's still football. "On offense, it brings out your creativity. You can actually make stuff up on the fly. I still run the Wing-T which I learned from (Marysville coaching legend) Walt Braun. And I researched some stuff on the Internet from Montana and Idaho where they have been playing it for a long time. "But, defensively, it's a headache. Our defensive coordinator sometimes is like, 'What do we prepare for?'" CPS apparently didn't prepare Friday night for Owen-Gage's Nick Zaleski, who rushed for 302 yards and three touchdowns. So far this season, Zaleski has rushed for 1,123 yards and has racked up 108 points. Zaleski has taken advantage of the open space on defense and is turning in a senior season to remember. "Offensively, there's a lot more room," Pierce said. "So, if you get a crease, look out... "And the kids have fun with it. There have been games in the 60s — and everybody likes scoring. The kids are getting more and more comfortable with it." The entire state should get more comfortable with it, too. It's here to stay. And I wouldn't be surprised to see more schools, including a few right here in the Thumb, go to it in the future. I found it fun and entertaining and not a whole lot different than regular 11-player football. News: Vassar's 26-17 Greater Thumb West decision over Reese highlighted a night of upsets Friday. Also, Marlette nabbed a 39-37 GTE overtime win over Sandusky while Peck stunned North Huron, 24-21, in the North Central Thumb League. Views: Let's start with the Vassar-Reese contest. The Vulcans have some offensive weapons, including speedy Keif Vickers, who rushed for 168 yards and one score. I am sure this game got the attention of Ubly and coach Bill Sweeney, whose Bearcats make a visit to Vassar for a non-league game this Friday. As for the Raiders' win over Sandusky, Marlette coach Denny Lester classified it as an "instant classic." And for good reason. The Redskins scored on the final play of regulation when Jordan Katt hit Cody Leander on a 14-yard strike. Clint Northrup then ran in the 2-pointer, tying the game at 31. From there, Marlette scored and converted the 2-pointer on its first possession. Sandusky followed up with a TD of its own, but failed on the tying 2-pointer. "This was probably one of the best games ever in the Marlette and Sandusky rivalry," Lester said. "It was a great show. It was kids making plays for both teams on both sides of the ball. "The defense really stepped up and made a huge stop on Sandusky's 2-point conversion. We are so proud of our kids to keep playing after Sandusky scored on the last play of the game and converted the 2-point conversion. A lot of kids would have folded, but our kids just kept playing." The win also keeps Marlette's playoff hopes alive. The 3-2 Raiders have three very winnable games left with Harbor Beach, Deckerville and Peck. They also play unbeaten Brown City. The 3-2 Redskins, meanwhile, still have Brown City, Harbor Beach, Bay City All Saints and Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port on the docket. The Week 9 game with the Lakers might be for a postseason berth. Peck's win over North Huron is a little baffling to me. The Pirates hadn't shown a whole lot in the first four weeks while the Warriors were coming in off an impressive 14-point victory over defending NCTL champion Dryden. Now, the Warriors are going to have to scratch and claw their way into the playoffs, starting with a huge game with Mio this Friday for Homecoming. In my book, it's a must win. News: Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port moved to 4-1 overall with a 40-7 shelling of Deckerville on Saturday as part of the Laker 50th Homecoming celebration. Views: Believe it or not, the Lakers led just 12-7 at the half before they exploded for four second-half scores. The EPBP defense simply shut down the Deckerville offense in the second half. The Eagles couldn't run up the middle against the Laker beef up front, couldn’t get to the outside much against the Laker speed, and dropped a couple of passes which could have went for touchdowns. That's kind of how it's gone for the Eagles this season. Now, Deckerville must run the table to guarantee itself a spot in the playoffs. The Eagles are a victim of their own success. Everyone expects them to be fighting for a league title and a top seed in the playoffs year after year. And in most cases, they do. But this year, they've struggled on both sides of the ball, but especially on offense, scoring just 25 points in their last three games. Let's make one thing clear. A Bill Brown-coached team will not give up — ever. Don't be surprised to see the Eagles sneak into the playoffs as a five-win team. If they don't, expect them to rebound quickly. They haven't had back-to-back losing seasons since the 1970s. News: On a personal note, myself and Jerry Kranz finish up the 2009 golf season undefeated against "The Administrators," Steve Budzynski and Don Schelke. Views: Collecting money has never been easier. News: Also, I would be remiss if I didn't mention my wife set a personal best time at her half marathon in Lansing this past weekend. Views: Way to go, Heidi. I am looking forward to Chicago in a few weeks. She runs. I eat and drink. It doesn't get much better than that! Ubly scored on every possession of the first half and the first possession of the second half en route to building a 42-0 lead over Harbor Beach. The Pirates did get on the board three times, including twice in the game's final two minutes, but the Bearcats ran their regular season winning streak to 19 with a 42-22 decision.
Justin Cleary led Ubly with 167 yards on 14 carries. Bryan Nash added 63 yards on seven totes and two scores of 1 and 5 yards. Jordan Terrasi added two touchdown runs of 4 and 6 yards while Kade Kwiatkowski added a 10-yard score in the third quarter. For Harbor Beach, Shane Ginther had 71 yards on 11 carries, including a 43-yard TD run. Ryan Maurer added a 54-yard scoring run while Brian Dekoski had a 46-yard score. It was homecoming and Ashley Burton was named queen. Here are some photos from the game and the rest of the festivities. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Friday, September 25. 2009Week 5 is here...

It was a busy day around the Thumb on Thursday. First, it was Harbor Beach at Caseville for a GTE soccer match. Then, it was over to Cass City for a GTW tri-match with EPBP and Reese. The Tribune will have results from these games, along with the rest of Thursday's action in Friday's paper. Until then, here are some photos.

Thursday, September 24. 2009Quick Week 5 Preview...
UPPER THUMB — The last time Deckerville was 2-2 at this point of the season was 2005.
So what did the Eagles wind up doing the rest of that season? They rallied to win four of their last five games to secure a playoff spot. The 2009 Eagles are hoping to do the same thing as they start their second half of the season at 2 p.m. Saturday against a very strong Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port squad. For the 2-2 Eagles, it's a chance to get back on track after losing two straight games, including a disappointing 33-12 Greater Thumb East setback to rival Sandusky. For the 3-1 Lakers, it's an opportunity to show off in front of what should be a huge crowd for the Laker 50th Homecoming celebration. Deckerville's problems the last few weeks have been two-fold. The offense has sputtered, scoring just three touchdowns after ripping off 91 points in the first two games. They also have failed on all three 2-point attempts. Defensively, the Eagles have yielded too many big plays. They have given up six TDs of 23 yards or more in the last two games against the Redskins and Brown City. Deckerville's young offensive and defensive lines will get a stern test against the Lakers, who have some of the biggest and most experienced front line players on both sides of the ball in the area. The Lakers have been rolling the last three weeks, capped by an impressive 46-15 pounding of GTW rival Unionville-Sebewaing Area last Friday. EPBP’s Mike Wolschlager rushed for 85 yards and four touchdowns while Chris Rowe added 145 yards and caught a 15-yard TD pass. Brody Lawrence added another score for the Lakers. Quarterback Luke Voelker threw for 57 yards while Tim Warack added 61 yards via the pass. The Lakers are in position to force a Week 7 showdown with Reese for the GTW championship. If they can take care of Bay City All Saints next week, and the Rockets can beat Vassar (Friday) and Cass City (Oct. 2), the Oct. 9 contest at EPBP will be for a piece of the league crown. Coach George Gardy won't talk about it right now, but EPBP also is jockeying for playoff points. Through Week 4, the Lakers have 48.500 points, but wins over Deckerville, Reese and Sandusky (Week 9) would push that total way up, possibly giving them a couple of home playoff games. Meanwhile, the Eagles are playing for their playoff lives. Deckerville's schedule is one of the toughest in the area, with the potential of having seven playoff teams on it. Even a 5-4 mark could get the Eagles into the postseason. In GTE games: • 0-4 Harbor Beach is at 4-0 Ubly: How times have changed. From 2003 to 2006, these games were decided by an average of 5.25 points. The last two games they've played the average difference has been 31.5 points, with each school earning a win. • 3-1 Sandusky travels to 2-2 Marlette: A huge game for both teams, but especially for Marlette. The Raiders still have Deckerville and Brown City on the schedule, and need a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. In the GTW: • 2-2 Bay City All Saints is at 1-3 Bad Axe: This could be a trap game for the Cougars, who would like nothing more than to knock off EPBP next week. So, they might be looking past the Hatchets, who have the potential to do damage, but must play a complete game. • 0-4 USA travels to 2-2 Cass City: All of a sudden, Cass City is in the mix for a shot at the playoffs. This game is a must for the Red Hawks, who still have Reese and Vassar on the schedule. The Week 9 game against Caro might decide their playoff fate. In the North Central Thumb League: • 3-1 North Huron is at 1-3 Peck: The Pirates have won two straight against the Warriors, including a tight 28-25 decision last season which knocked North Huron out of the playoff chase. In Mid-Michigan 8-Man: • 2-2 Carsonville-Port Sanilac is at 1-3 Owendale-Gagetown: The Tigers earned a 36-0 win over the Bulldogs in a non-league game in Week 2. • 1-3 Akron-Fairgrove is at 0-1 Flint MSD: Last week, Flint MSD played its first varsity football game since 1984, dropping a 42-6 decision to CPS. This game is slated to be played tonight. In non-league action: • 0-2 Detroit Consortium is at 3-1 Dryden: In its first year of football, Consortium has lost to Detroit Kettering (22-0) and Detroit Redford Academy (34-8). Meanwhile, the Cardinals will try to shake off last week's loss to North Huron. • 2-2 Memphis travels to 0-4 Kent City: Who is Kent City you ask? Well, the Eagles play in the Ottawa-Kent Conference's Silver Division. They've been outscored 158-14 so far this season. • 0-4 Big Rapids Crossroads at 0-4 Kingston: Someone will get win No. 1. Crossroads is 0-17 in its two-plus seasons of playing football. Wednesday, September 23. 2009Rockefeller wins Week 4 Blog Contest...
