I havent seen genesee play this year, but looking at Cook's numbers from the brown city game make it sound like he's somewhat of what Kaufman was last year for ubly. He runs, he throws and he returns kick.
Anyone hear of a coaching change at Cass City? Rumor around town is Cuthrell got relieved of his football coaching duties.
yes, maybe cass city didnt make the play offs, but at least they have had winning seasons. You should be happy to have good coaches as Cuithrell and his staff. All some schools have are people that think they know how to coach and dont know jack about anything. As far as i'm concerned, Cass City and Owen-Gage just let go some of the best coaches that really care about the programs that they coach. Now with Dave Fritz out of the way, Doug Hyatt can lead o-g girls in a different direction. Hats off too Dave Fritz and all the hard work he has put in at O-G the last several years. And too the a.d., school board and Compton, shame on you all. Gee, i wonder you will be replaced as coaches next year by the all mighty ones.
I don't think anyone is challenging whether or not they "really care about the programs that they coach." I sounds like you have some personal problems with certain individuals. I believe the discussion in Cass City is a "program" issue, not a "personal" issue. The people are great, the program isn't. Time to try something new.
If you live by the attitude, "do you think you'll find someone better?" then you will never change what's been happening. If you are so concerned about the new coach "really caring about the programs they coach," you can always find someone who will care about a program. Lots of people care. I'm sure William Clay Ford cares about the Lions. Caring isn't solving the problems.
I've heard the same thing, but have yet to find any truth to it. I was told that the ENTIRE coaching staff got the boot.
Hmmm....so the coaching staff got axed, and you don't mean "axed to come back?" Didn't see that coming honestly. Once you are in the "good-ole-boys club," not much will change.
Let's take a jog down memory lane: 2004 Playoffs: Blew an 8-point 4th quarter lead for the District championship. 2005 Playoffs: Blew a 9-point 4th quarter lead AT HOME (with pretty much the same great players, probably a better team than the 2004 group) for the District championship. 2008 Regular Season: Started 5-0...finished 5-4...NO PLAYOFFS! Honestly, if they only won 5 games with last year's group (Babich, Varney, etc.) how could anyone have expected them to win 4 games this year? They had one senior, and he got injured. I actually thought they did well this year, so I'm surprised the coaches got let go. They started 0-2, won 3 straight, then lost to Reese. So, at 3-3, they were looking really good. But, losing to BCAS at HOME should have never happened! At least not when you have a shot at being 4-3 with two games remaining and a chance at the playoffs. At the beginning of the year, they probably weren't expected to beat BCAS, but when you start winning games and BCAS has a worse record than you, expectations change. Then, they lost to Vassar and Caro. Did anyone expect them to win those games at any point in the season? No. So, in August, 3-6 is what I expected Las Vegas to set the "over/under" at. Mission Accomplished. I think Coach Cuthrell is a great person, but the staff certainly had plenty of talent and chances the last 10 seasons. Just look at our wonderful BOYS sports TEAM banners in the gym. Embarrassing. The last District Championship by a boy's TEAM was 2000 in basketball. Track, golf, and cross-country are individual sports in my opinion. I don't count wrestling because not every school in the GTC offers it, nor is a District tournament like the other sports. I'm only looking at "The Big 3" (Football, Basketball, Baseball aka the "sexy" sports).
Bitter Redhawk Fan, in your post your mention great players (04-05) and you also mention plenty of talent over the last ten years. I am not a Cass City fan but I have watched them play while Cuthrell's been the coach and I don't think they ever had a more talented team than who was on top in the league during those years. The GTC W has had some great teams with great players like USA and Reese but I don't ever think that there has been any real standout football players come out of Cass City during the last ten years. I would be interested to have you site examples of great players and when we use the word great I mean someone like a Bitzer or a Kaufman or a Volmering or someone who went on to play in college.
I understand your point. I'm not comparing Cass City's team with the other teams in the GTC-W. Yes, when CC had their "success" Reese and USA were still better. I get that. But when a school team has been down for so many years, around here good players seem "great" because of so many of the bad years.
Right, CC hasn't had any Kaufman's, Travis's, Heinlein's, or Bitzer's. I get that. Relax. It seems like I offended you more than actual CC people. But I'm more talking about the playoffs. That was a huge disappointment. And if they would have had to play Reese/USA in the playoffs, they would have lost again, but they weren't playing Reese/USA, they were playing beatable teams (which is obvious since they were winning by a TD in the 4th quarter of those games.) The word "talent" meant there was enough athletes that CC should have done better, either in the playoffs, regular season, etc. I said "10 seasons" because that's how long they have been coaching. I wasn't implying they had 10 seasons of good teams/players that "choked" every year. When the talent was there, they choked. Some teams overachieve, some...
Bitter,
The one major problem with Cass City football under Cuthrell was they never got over the hump. They had talent equal to and better than the teams they played. Win some lose some, but the major reason for the losses was crappy defense and that defensive inadequacy was never addressed. I live in the CC district and my neighbor Dave is a very knowledgeable and die hard Cass City supporter. The joke between him and former players was "#4 defense" ..."#4 defense" ...four fingers tapped on the thigh. It was the signal for the prevent defense scheme. Former players and Dave called it the "Prevent you from winning defense"! Cuthrell and company are not hated or despised by his former players or fans, its just that they never really got the job done.
All I know of Coach Cuthrell is he is a nice guy/person. I have no idea what his coaching strategies/knowledge is like. I cannot comment on any of that. They just never made it over the hump, like you said. No hatred, just job didn't get done.
The defense...do you really want to go there? However, was that really Cuthrell?
Grandmaster Mike! The pictures look great! Holy cow, did Paul Adams go to the game with you to take them?!? LOL!!
Great job Mike on the pics. I got my last day of golf in at Huron Shores, played some great golf on the back 9, (no comment on the front 9), came home to celebrate a birthday party with the youngest daughter and family and caught the Deckerville football game on the radio, and I was hoping for some nice pictures of my Eagles. Good job again. Thanks for taking the trip from Huron County all the way to Waterford to cover the game. And by the way, Thumb Tailgater Sports will be covering the Reese @ St.Charles game!!
Just wondering if there is any cross country news? Any local teams qualify for state??
Reese will have a challenge this week against St. Charles. Like Bad Axe, St. Charles runs the single wing offense and the Hatchets ran up some numbers against Reese. St. Charles does a lot of man-to-man blocking unlike Bad Axe who likes to pull guards and tackles. Also another difference between the two is while Bad Axe likes the Buck the Bulldogs like the Fullback spinner. I was at the St. Charles game last week and it's a great offense to watch and very hard to find the ball carrier. St. Charles likes to hit! Good luck to Brady Love and his staff at St. Charles.
We played St. Charles in a scrimmage last year and they run the single-wing offense exceptionally well.
Oh good one man, just saying that they have it down even better than us at Bad Axe who scored running it against every teams first defense at least once. Just trying to make a point that they kept all their running backs from last year and probably run it even better than they did when we played them. Way to hide behind the most girly name you could cupcake.
I sure hope Coach Rowland and his crew can make this community eat their words, in the seasons coming up. I am a proud supprter of Bad Axe Football, and proud of our kids. Dont think for a minute there are too many teams out there that can come off the field being good sports like the Bad Axe boys do, after how they are viewed by the community. I know they can get things in order, and come out on top, but first they have to BELIEVE in THEIRSELVES, then the rest will come. Bad AAxe Hatchets we believe in you, show them what you have.We are not a GIRLY TEAM and you will eat your words!
Exept for Bay City, Mayville, and Harbor Beach...Now onto Cass City. The "people" in charge at Cass City made a mistake in getting rid of Cuthrell. Cass City's superintendent is always telling the press that they're "poor" so what are they going to do now? Are they going to create a teaching job for a new coach? This isn't the NFL where you can your coach 3 days after the season. Was he given a warning and given a chance to improve his staff? We will probably never know the answers to those questions. And, if I'm correct, didn't he coach track? If I were Scott I wouldn't coach anything. There are plenty of teachers who rely on others to do all the work and expect someone else to do it...so, Cuthrell has earned a break. Remember, now the Cass City admin. has to replace the whole football coahing staff 7-12, schools already have trouble finding coaches and I can see CC having the same problem.
A few years ago there was an article in the huron daily tribune- yes, I know CC is not in Huron County, but we all read it that said, School's don't fire coaches. Paul, please refresh our memories a bit about this article. It was either done by you or the other guy.
I had AD's from all over commenting about it. I am interested to see if CC had any say about this at the time. I laughed at the article because I knew it was BS. As for his dismissal, it is pretty sad. I've seen his team play and they are what they are. They are coached no worse than any other team in the area, and some of these teams are coached pretty bad. Some of those teams even made the play offs in recent years and this year. Are they any good in other sports? Does the basketball coach get them over the 'hump'? What about the track coach? Does he get them over the hump?
WAITAMIINUTE made an interesting point. What other CC sports haven't made it over the "hump" in 10 years? Did their coaches fired as well? I'm warmin' up my record player and puttin' on the "Humpty Dance" just waiting for an answer.
I don't know what say a head coach has on who he wants as assistants. Throughout Cuthrell's tenure at CC he had a very good offensive scheme coupled to an atrocious defense. The Red Hawks seemingly scored at will and then allowed the adversary to do the same. Cuthrell's fault...maybe not...your given the horses you command.
Millington is seeking a new head coach. Wouldn't be interesting if Cuthrell got the job? With the assistant support over there...hmmm.
Coaches don't get fired, because they all have their contracts done on a year-by-year basis. So in this case, Cuthrell and his staff aren;t fired, they are just not being brought back.
Call it what you will: "just not coming back", "not having his contract renewed", being "let go"...this was being fired. Period.
Cathrell won't coach at Millington...that job is Roger Bearss. That's why he's was welcomed back to Millington several years ago.
Behind the CC Football situation there is someone who had to make the call. We most likley never know who that person was or who the small group of people were, but I can assure you he she or they expected more out of the football program than they got. My question is this, What is the expectations of the school for your varsity football program?
I see the CC soccer team was not that good and the volleyball team got knocked out of the districts real quick so maybe they should let them go as well? Just who is going to want to coach in CC with the way they treat there coaches. Guess what, you have a few bad teachers in CC (just like every school) as well try getting rid of them. I have always been amazed at how fired up parents and a community will get over a coach they don't like but never seem to care as much about a teacher who can't get kids over the hump in the classroom.
Ozzie,
It may be less steps to get rid of a football coach, but getting rid of a teacher is just as easy...a school district has 4 years to get rid of any teacher...after that "probation" period, a teacher become tenured. After they are tenured, it comes down to documentation and giving the teacher a chance to improve themselves. If the teacher made no improvement, they're out. Simple. Did the athletic director sit down with Scott over the past year and offer those things he could improve upon? We may never know the answer to that question. In my opinion, Scott and his staff were blindsided. That is not how you treat people who are loyal to your students and your school. Cass City is headed in the wrong direction. As for who to blame, blame the superintendent if you can't find anyone else. He is the one who sits at the top and runs the school. I'm sure he had to approve Scott being "let go" and the buck stops at his desk.
Call it what you will, he was fired, and from news around town is that a certain someone, has been 'snooping' in business that he has no business 'snooping' in. The problem lies with the superintendent of the school, he is the head honcho and if he can't take the heat, then fire his a@*! He obviously has the final say, at least he should, he makes over a 100 grand! This becomes the problem with public school's.
1. People complain, they don't praise and Super's almost always side with the parents. 2. Community members only care about wins and losses 3. 6 wins and your in is a major problem. 6 wins and your play off quality! Hardly not. $$$ 4. Super's and AD's want ZERO confrontation. It is a 'save your butt mentality" 5. School Boards are useless. They really are. They are their to make policy, when the state has already set policy and standards. Yet, they feel the 'glory' of being KING or Queen. 6. A super/ and principal should really know what is going on. Go to practice, find out if the coaches is teaching them how to block or tackle correctly, do they run a offense and a sound defense. I would be weery of the coach who has a playbook in a binder. You are looking for a coach who has it in his head. 7. A coach who has a playbook in his head, understands what he wants to accomplish. Thus, does not need tricks or gimmicks to be successful. 8. A successful coach is one who teaches the basics correctly. 9. Super's are responsible for everything, that is why they are paid the highest, I challenge any super to refute this. Does this mean that the super should get fired, no, but it does mean that he has to investigate the situation, and really make a sound decision. Not like the decision that was made at the TRIBUNE by moving the printing to Midland. It will have its repercussions, but that is why Bosses get paid the big bucks. 10. God Bless Coach for his time and effort that he put into his program. Many don't realize the amount of time one puts into coaching football. NO YOU DON'T, and it comes out to about 2 to 3 dollars and hour.
What are you saying? It's a problem in public schools but not private schools? It's a problem because the Super makes a lot of money? Because the Super makes over $100 it's all of a sudden his fault? Doesn't pretty much MOST Super's in the Three Counties make around $100, give or take $5000? What does someone's pay grade have to do with anything? People are given certain jobs to make certain decisions. A decision was made.
Waitaminute has some very good points, the powers that be better hope this move pays off or there going to look stupid. They also have set a standard at the school for all the rest of the coaches that may not be attainable and then what will they do. I feel bad for the coach and his family they have sacrificed alot for the kids and the school and were willing to step up and take the challange of coaching. The days of having coaches that coach for long periods of time are over because of people that don't understand what high school sports are all about. Good luck to the Cathrells and if you leave CC for something bettter many people would understand.
