Exactly right Paul. For the first quarter, it looked like it might be a game. Then Ubly dropped 40 on them in the second quarter. Good job by the Ubly coaching staff to make adjustments to what Genesee was doing. Genesee had all 11 guys in the box, and still couldn't stop Ubly's running attach. I think the Genesee quarterback was decent, but his receivers dropped too many passes. Credit Ubly for hitting the Genesee receivers hard. You can tell they had second thoughts every time a ball was thrown in their direction.
Congrats to the Bearcats!
I can't think of one thing I would rather do next Saturday night, High School Football under the lights in the thumb for a regional championship. Go Bearcats.
I can think of only one thing I would like to do more but Im to getting to old and my wife would rather go watch the bearcats anyways.
Congrats to the Bearcats!!!!! We are so very proud of everyone of you. Keep up the great work and good luck in next week's game.
Whats in the water at Ubly? Two District Championships in two days, I hope all the Ubly fans enjoy this, alot of people would love to have the success they have had with the football and volleyball programs. Good luck next week.
Congrats to Ubly.....and since there is no where else to post this at the moment...CONGRATULATIONS to the Caseville Lady Eagle Volleyball team on their district championship over North Huron. Too bad no one from the local press was there to cover this classic match up. Both teams played some exceptional volleyball and it was a pleasure to watch two teams battle so hard and so well. Caseville took the first two games and it looked like they might possibly sweep the match but NH came back strong in the third game and it seemed momentum may have changed as NH was looking strong in the 4th game. But give credit to Caseville as they refused to give in and they held off NH 25-23 to win the title.
Dan, Unfortunately for us, we had three places to be and only two reporters to cover these events. I will be at the North Huron regional on Tuesday.
Paul, no offense meant...just mentioned it because it was a great match and a good story. Caseville's first girls title in 24 years. Glad to hear you will be ther next Tuesday and hope the games are as good as this one was.
I can't say for sure, but when I spoke to the Ubly AD before the time was set, he indicated that the team wanted it at 7 p.m. if the game was going to be on Saturday. Also, it has something to do with the travel, Petersburg is South of Ann Arbor.
Yes, the Ubly AD called me last night to confirm it. The game will be 7 p.m. on Saturday in Ubly.
Here is a report on Petersburg-Summerfields victory over Loyola. Includes game stats and readers comments.

Reading your reporter Chris' O. article, I can't help but wonder if he should not attend an English class. And who really cares who his wife taught or didn't teach in school. Maybe she should give him an english lesson, this is a football article not a personal storyline. And a "sacrificial lamb".....what a way to trash talk.
visitor you are correct. how unfair, not only to the kids from petersburg summerfield, but ubly as well. i am sure ps is proud of their season & coming to ubly to win. as far as the ubly kids, i am sure that is what they want their opponent to have, bulletin board material. this is high school athletics, no the pros. i think it is an embarrassment for an adult to say that about a team of 16-17 year old kids. too bad for both ps & the ubly football teams. they have had great seasons. give them some respect.
Chris O works for the Huron County Press. You are right on the money that his comment "sacrificial lamb" is poor judgement on his part and maybe he should address that. We all make mistakes and I believe Chris made one here, so Chris do the right thing and say your sorry and it won't happen again.
what happened to the professionalism of some of the media? what gives a person who writes for a paper or who has a blog the right to just bash whoever they please? do you really expect to be able to move on to the next level by writing this crap? maybe you're happy with life here and don't care to move on but if you want someone to keep buying your paper and a paycheck coming your way, maybe have more respect for people/teams/community's.
All I can say, is I take my job very seriously. I am proud to work at the Huron Daily Tribune. We all make mistakes, but I guess we have to learn from them. I know I've made my share, and learned a lot from them.
Paul have you ever let your personal feelings or ego get in the way when writing an article for the paper or blog? Have you ever written a story basically rooting for a personal favorite team or your hometown??
I stumbled across this gem while browsing Glaza's blog: http://thumbsports.blogspot.com/ Scroll down and read the Millington/Vassar article slamming Vassar and the community after congratulating the coach, then read the article and check out the pic of what happened as a result of said slam/article. Amazing, this idiot even LIVES in Vassar and is as unprofessional as they come. One would think he would put his education to work in a better way rather than let his personal bias, homerism, call it what you want, get in the way of a great football game.
As I said before, I have made my share of mistakes, but try to learned from them. I do write stories slanted towards our area teams when they are in the playoffs and not playing other area teams. I am fair, but I am there to report on our teams.
My columns are a little different, as is the blog.
for the record, I'm not the same "check this out" that posted above on Chris O. I came in here after finding that interesting post.
for the record, I'm not the same "check this out" that posted above on Chris O. I came in here after finding that interesting post on another blog.
Funny that I have to come here and address this here as it has already been addressed on my blog.
Some people expressed their feelings to me that the term "sacrificial lamb" was too harsh. I listened to their opinion and removed the comment from the story. Here is exactly what I wrote: "I removed the term sacrificial lamb, because some of you were offended by that and for that I apologize. So please allow to restate and rephrase my point...while Pettersburg-Summerfield has had a successful season at 10-1, they are just 31-62 in their last 10 years for roughly a .333 winning percentage. Their signature win of the regular season was a hard-fought 18-13 win over an eventual 6-3 Ottawa Lake Whiteford. So for a team truly lacking in a winning tradition, playing on the road against a team that has players returning from a state runner-up finish last year that has had nine straight winning season and nine straight playoff appearances, I think they will be extremely challenged to compete with Ubly. I think their team should be proud of what they accomplished, but the odds are against them in winning this game. I hope I was able to get the same point across, albeit in a more extended way." To visitor, I would say, I wrote a wrap-up of the game, not a story on the blog. My stories go in the paper. Since a blog is less formal, I do feel it is important to share information about myself and family there, because it is a way for my readers to get to know me. If you don't want to read those type of wrap-ups, don't read them. check this out, it is easy to bash someone from behind a made up name. But if you don't like my work, say you don't like my work, why stoop to name calling? Just because I have covered the Ubly team this year and am knowledgeable about them and likewise did a preview that included all 32 teams in D7 and made a prediction on the game based on that, which favors Ubly doesn't make me a homer. We give the the same type of coverage we gave Ubly to ever team in every sport that stood as the best in the area. Lakers in fb, HB in soccer, BA in cross country, everyone in volleyball, because there were no standouts. All I ask is if you have an issue with something I say, say it to me directly on my blog, which is the appropriate venue to address the feelings you have about it.
Ubly has had a very easy first three rounds of the playoffs, “much like last year". After they beat a very overrated Petersburg-Summerfield they will face an unbeaten Hudson or Mendon team. These teams are ALOT better than the Reading team they faced in last year’s semis. Ubly has gotten lucky with easy 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round draws the past 2 years. IF they can get past the Semi final game they will probably play SF again. If not SF it will be Ishpeming (7-2), Merrill (6-3, or Ravenna (7-2).
I'm with you there Playoffguy,
Summerfield will be another pasty. But I can't wait to play the winner of Mendon/Hudson. Finally the 'cats will get to play a frickin' good team! I don't care if we win or loss...well I certainly hope we win...I just want to see a great football game. Something that hasn't happened the past two years at Ubly.
Our country is a bunch of sissy's these days. We are so easily offended by EVERYTHING. Too bad we couldn't get this worked up about abortion, homosexual marriage, divorce, etc.
How about killing more of our boys in Afghanistan and doing the bidding of anything the Israelis want. Use all my money overseas, send jobs to China, pretend we live in a country that "serves and protects" the citizen. Yeah Clint, your really with it.
Well...I'm almost sorry I created a sh..storm on this forum. Key word...almost. Lots of fun in my book.
Summerfield fans...I'm a big time Ubly homer. However, I do like to see a good game. I sat in the 'mingling stands'...BTW...the stands at Ubly are both on the same side...your not behind your bench...it sucks...I know...and I'm with you there. Anyway, I was actually hoping Genesee would put up a good fight, but they crumbled under the pressure way too early. Hope you guys have more fight in ya. Lord knows the Bearcats need someone to give them a tussle before they get into the semis.
Well, I did finally make it out to Ubly to see a game. I have to agree that I thought this was going to be a knock'em down drag'em out kind of game in the first quarter. But I really think the Genesse coaches decision to go for it on their own 29 cost Genesee the game. They were down 2 scores, but they were still in the game. And you had over half the game left to play. When they failed to convert and Ubly scores on the next play, you could quite literally see Genesee give up. This is where I have to hand it to Harbor Beach and Deckerville. They NEVER gave up in the Ubly games. They battled (yes, I know it was against Ubly's 2nd team, but still...) to the very end. Ubly had their JV in the whole 2nd half and Genesee was so mentally deflated they could do nothing against them, either. So, go Bearcats. Even though I'm not from Ubly, I am rooting for you all the way. Make the Thumb proud.
On a side note, it'd be nice to talk sports instead of petty jealousy crap on these blogs once in a while. How about all you bloggers make an effort to talk some game. Come on now, I know you're all intelligent enough to do it! I know Paul P is always up for some good game talk as well.
Ubly rolls to the semi's then ubly will find out just how good they are. I am curious to see how ubly would react if they were down 2 or 3 scores to a Hudson or mendon team. Would they spread things out or stick to their guns? They haven't been in that situation all season
Lets hope Ubly dosnt have to spread any team out! last year they tried shotgun against SF and that turned out to be a mistake. Lets hope this years QB has a better arm than lasts years.
#26 Pete & #27 Anon,
Good post. Pete, you saw exactly what I saw...and nearly every fan at the game saw. That 'go for it' in the early 2nd qt with Ubly up 22-6 was for the game. Way too early to give up and play into the hands of the opposition. The comparison of HB/Deckerville under similar conditions is right on. They would not give up the fight. Key observation 'Ubly had their JV in the whole 2nd half'. That wasn't the 2nd string which...love those guys, but they're like me...not real athletic. The was the JV's who went unbeaten and bring up many very good athletes. 'Would they spread things out or stick to their guns?' 'Cats will only do adjustments to what get them here...and I doubt Mendon or Hudson would do anything different either.
Sounds to me like Hudson, Mendon and Ubly all play the same kind of football. Will be really interesting to see Ubly play either Hudson or Mendon if they win Saturday (Not that I'm doubting them, I just threw that "if they win" in there to make it sound like I'm not overlooking Petersburg-or Summerfield-or whatever that team goes by). Good luck Bearcats!
Ubly will play a solid game as usual and beat summersfield. The question is who will they play? I am going with Hudson. The predictions on Massey say Mendon by 4. Hudsons regular season had better competion with the likes of Blissfield, Stockbridge, and Onstead. A key mathcup to note is that Mendon beat Bronson 21-14 in the regular season. Hudson beat Adison 40-0 and Adison lost to Bronson in the first round 27-13. The game is at Mendon but Hudson wll be ready for the big game and will prevail 21-20.
On the other side of the bracket, Ravenna is too strong and will beat Merill. It will be close cause Merill is a tough team with experience and is not going to back down; Ravena did have a slip at Oakridge in the middle of the season. As for Traverse City St. Francis and Ishpeming, of cousre TCSF will win. But its going to be closer than people think. TCSF has not been tested other than Novel Catholic who had a bad year themselves. Ishpeming struggled early but finished strong and look to prove themselves. But lack of experience will be costly,TCSF by two scores.
GO ALL THE WAY UBLY!!!
It' awesome to have a team from the thumb kicking butt the way Ubly has! You boys gotta know at this point in the game there is no bounderies..It's the thumb! and you boys are representing the THUMB! Know this...everybody from the thumb is rooting for you, all the way from HB to USA!!! to see so many kids from differant schools coming to your games and rooting you on is amazing! it's to bad some of the parents and elders cant learn a little something from the kids who are joining together to support a fine team from the thumb! Whatever the outcome is boys... be proud...you are playing great football...Ubly has a great program, and I for one will be following you all the way...There would be nothing better to see you boys go up against TCSF again..after what they did to HB a few years ago and the loss to you last year....it's our turn boys!! show some in your face thumb football!!!! |
